Acquiring Czech Citizenship by Declaration through Ancestors

Our law firm, as part of its private foreign clientele services, also specializes in obtaining Czech citizenship by declaration through ancestors. This is made possible under the Czech legal framework based on the amendment to the Act on Citizenship of the Czech Republic from 2019.

Basic conditions for acquiring Czech citizenship through ancestors are as follows:

The individual is not a citizen of the Slovak Republic, and
a parent (or parents) or grandparent (or grandparents) originally were, but ceased to be, Czech/Czechoslovak citizens at any time until December 31, 2013, with certain exceptions. The fact whether the parents or grandparents are alive plays no role in determining eligibility for Czech citizenship.
Parents can make such a declaration on behalf of their minor children.
The option to retroactively regain citizenship also applies to Czech / Czechoslovak citizens who lost it before the end of 2013, provided they had permanent residence in the territory of the Czech Republic.
